Indiana Medical Billing and Coding Licensing Requirements

The state of Indiana does not require a billing and coding license to perform this job role.

Instead, the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) offers several different medical billing and coding certifications.

Three common certificates earned include the Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Outpatient Coder (COC), and Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC).

To prepare for a billing and coding certification exam, you must enroll in a program that teaches you related medical terms.

Included courses also will cover anatomy, physiology, or biology subjects that will provide you with context when processing insurance claims and medical bills.

You also will learn various abbreviation sets, such as CPT®, HCPCS Level II, and ICD-10-CM coding protocols used in different medical settings.

Finish your training before other people do, or you might experience increased competition for positions at least after 2030.

You might work in a public or a private clinic or in a hospital emergency room.

However, some billers and coders find positions in rescue centers, schools, nursing homes, blood banks, or homeless shelters.

Become a billing or coding specialist, what are some challenges?

Sometimes, it becomes tedious because you might have to repeatedly enter the same codes into the computer.

Increases in patient intake can also seem overwhelming at times.

When it gets busy, you have to make sure you do not make mistakes under stress.

As a billing and coding professional, how likely am I to work at home?

Skilled professionals who have worked in that field for at least a few years land most of the home positions.

However, you might find positions after a year or two that will allow you to work at least a couple of days a week away from the office.

How long does medical billing and coding training take?

The entry-level CPC training before your first exam may take you about four months.

The AAPC, however, does indicate certification may take up to eight months depending on what certification level you choose.

If enrolled in an optional degree program, you would be in school for two to four years.
