Licensing Requirements to Become a Pharmacy Technician in Oklahoma

The state of Oklahoma does not require candidates to complete a post-secondary educational program.

However, candidates must be registered with the state in order to work in the field.

In addition, candidates must work under a licensed pharmacist and receive on-the-job training.

The Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy (OSBP) outlines the rules and regulations for the industry in the state of Oklahoma as well as the requirements for candidates who wish to work in the field in this state.

The board requires that candidates graduate high school or obtain a GED, be mentally and physically fit to perform the duties of the job, as well as have a high moral code.

Candidates are required to apply for their permits to work through the Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy (OSBP) after completing on-the-job training.

The onus is therefore on the candidate to source a licensed pharmacist who will be willing to offer training.

Furthermore, in terms of certification, the state of Oklahoma does not require certification from candidates.

However, candidates who wish to demonstrate that they possess the knowledge and skills to perform the job may apply for certification by passing the Pharmacy Technician Certification Examination.

There are two options for taking this examination:

  • The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board
  • The National Healthcare Association

Each examination, as of 2022, costs $100.

1. Oklahoma City Community College

The college is situated in Oklahoma City.

Oklahoma City Community College offers a Pharmacy Technician Certificate program that is delivered over a zoom class by a certified pharmacy technician.

The program consists of a total of  48 classroom hours and upon successful completion of the program, students are awarded a certificate of completion.

The program takes 16 weeks to complete and classes are offered in the daytime at the Metro Campus.

Meridian Technology Center is located in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

The school offers a one-year Pharmacy Technician Certificate program.

The program uses PioneerRx Pharmacy Software, to allow students to work in a real-world simulated environment using state-of-the-art software that is currently being used in the industry.

Students must complete the 600-credit hour program in order to graduate with a certificate of completion.

Students take a range of courses that prepare them to take the national examination and enter the field in an entry-level position.

4. Penn Foster Career School

The program is a partner of retail pharmacies such as Walgreens, CVS, and Kroger.

The program comprises 13 courses, 31 examinations, and one externship which must be completed before the student receives a certificate of completion.

5. Mednoc Training College
